Abstract: This lecture revisits TRIPS more than three decades after its adoption, approaching minimum intellectual property standards not as neutral legal baselines but as a contested theory of innovation embedded in global economic governance. It examines how uniform standards have structured assumptions about innovation, convergence, and legitimacy across unequal economies, and how these assumptions are increasingly strained by plural innovation practices and shifting geopolitical conditions. It explores the growing tension between uniform standards and plural innovation models, asking whether minimum IP standards will continue to function as a stable foundation for global legal coordination in a multipolar innovation landscape, or whether their legal authority will give way to more differentiated regulatory futures.
