Mrs Jayashree Watal, Counsellor, World Trade Organization, will speak on the topic of "The Law and Economics of Patented Medicines".

This talk will briefly set out what we know from the literature in Economics about the business of pharmaceutical innovation, give a negotiating history of the relevant TRIPS provisions and set up a discussion on reconciling incentives for pharmaceutical innovation with access to the resulting products.

Jayashree Watal is currently Counsellor in the Intellectual Property, Government Procurement and Competition Division of the World Trade Organization, and has held this position from February 2001.  She has been a member of the Governance Board of the Medicines Patent Pool, a non-profit organization based in Geneva since 2015. She also holds part-time faculty positions at the Georgetown University Law Center (since 2009) and at the University of Barcelona’s International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO) programme (since 2010).
