Professor Juan Martínez Otero joins CIPIL as a Research Visitor from the University CEU-Cardinal Herrera in Valencia, Spain. Professor Martínez's research focuses on the juridical aspects of the Media and digital technologies, and their impact on constitutional rights. He has paid particular attention to the protection of minors in the audiovisual landscape. Professor Martínez is also interested in how to protect the right to privacy, self-image, data protection and honour on the Internet, balancing the right to freedom of speech with the right to information. In addition to this, he has studied the juridical aspects of some bio-ethical and medical questions, such as the privacy and data protection of the patients, or the objection of conscience of the health professionals.

During his stay, Professor Martinez is researching the legal implications of genetic testing and its relationship with equality, data protection, the right to information, and privacy. The generalisation of genetic testing, particularly after their commercialization through the Internet by private companies, raises several questions connected with constitutional rights. The Council of Europe, the European Union and individual countries are making important efforts to pass legislation that address these challenges.  Professor Martínez aims to analyse the European legal framework that is applicable to the different types of genetic test, and to highlight the points in which it fails to provide clear or fair answers. He will focus particularly in the Direct-to-Consumer genetic tests.
