CIPIL is pleased to congratulate Ng Yan Chuan (Tripos, Lucy Cavendish College), Julian Nino (LLM, St. Edmund's College), and Jackson Sirica (LLM, Girton College) on reaching the Grand Final of the 16th Oxford International Intellectual Property Moot 2018.
Hosted by the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre (OIPRC), the Oxford IP Moot invites teams from universities around the world to prepare written submissions and present oral argument on each side of a hypothetical intellectual property law problem set by experts in the field. This year, students were challenged on four legal issues relating to copyright and performance right in the law of a fictitious country, Erewhon.
Coached by Professor Lionel Bently and Dr Christina Angelopoulos, these talented students did exceptionally well, coming second place overall. The three day competition was fierce, with many excellent student teams competing from around the world (from both common law and civilian jurisdictions). After two days of preliminary rounds, the University of Cambridge team successfully proceeded through the quarterfinal and semi-final knock-out rounds (against the University of Alberta and Goethe University, Frankfurt). The final was judged by Lord Justice Kitchin, Mr Justice Carr and Mr Justice Birss. Congratulations also to the students of the University of New South Wales (Australia) who pipped the University of Cambridge team to first place.
